What to do in Midyat in the evening

What to do in Midyat in the evening

Most visitors fill the day with Mor Gabriel, Dara or Mardin and come back tired. Yet Midyat shows its character in the evening: the stone gives back the heat it absorbed all day and the streets turn yellow.

1. Join a sıra gecesi

A regular, nightly programme is rare in this region. Live reyhani, a kilim-covered courtyard, mırra coffee. At Konak Baypark it starts at 19:30; details here. Reservation is required — do not count on walking in.

2. Walk through old Midyat

The hour right after sunset is when the stone façades look their best. Starting at the filigree bazaar and walking towards the mansion streets takes half an hour and is the quickest way to understand the fabric of the town.

3. Find a view

Midyat is not a flat plains town; even a small change in level opens up the plain. Mansion terraces and higher points are the right places to sit in the evening cool.

4. Sit down for a mırra

Mırra belongs to the evening more than to breakfast. It is bitter, taken without sugar and finished in one sip. Strange the first time, familiar the second.

5. Set a late table in a courtyard

The Midyat table does not get heavier at night, it gets longer. Nuts, fruit, çiğköfte and endlessly refilled tea carry easily to midnight.

If you are looking for a place to stay, have a look at our rooms; the café-restaurant is open to day visitors too.
