Old Mardin
Old Mardin is built in stone terraces on a slope overlooking the Mesopotamian plain. The roofs of the houses work as the terrace of the street below; that logic gives the town its unmistakable silhouette.
The Great Mosque, the Zinciriye and Kasımiye madrasas and the Deyrulzafaran Monastery are the main stops. The bazaar, with its silversmiths and coppersmiths, is still very much alive.
Visiting notes: about an hour from Midyat. The streets are steep and stone-paved, so wear comfortable shoes. Parking in the centre is difficult; it is easier to leave the car at the car parks by the entrance and walk in.
